Chettinad
A Pencilled Portrayal

Chettinad - A Pencilled Portrayal is an output of the detail documentation and on-site study the village of Chettiars named as Kanadukathan in Tamil Nadu done by the First Year, B.Arch. Students in the year 2012-2013. This study was conducted as part of the 1st Year, Relative Study Programme (RSP).

This compilation is a pencilled reflection of the rich architecture and culture that stands as a testimony to the lived history of Chettiars in Kanadukathan. It attempts to capture the essence of place in time and history in the visual form. From exquisitely crafted mansions and temple complex to the everyday craft spaces of Chettinad cotton weaving centre, this compilation is a sincere attempt of documenting these architectural building typologies in the form of pure pencil drawings. Furthermore, the experiences of making of Athangudi tiles and of visit to the magnificent Meenakshi Temple Complex completes the entire experience as a whole.

It is a compilation of great value embedded in the rich architectural history of India, not to be missed!

M Arch UD II Year (2019-2020)

Small towns are economically very relevant and establish themselves as a layer between metropolitans and villages. It is high time that we understand urbanism not just from large metropolitans but also should include the aspiration of quality of life in different scales of settlements.

Urban spaces studied in the book have undergone transformation due to socio-economic and political factors. Students of Master’s Programme in Urban Design have enquired the meaning of such urban spaces in present-day life to explore the direction of Indian urbanism. The data collected in the process identified many phenomenon and students learned the methods of data collection and presented it in a form of paper.
