Labs

PVPCOA had invested its energy, resources and time to build up the necessary infrastructure in the form of various Laboratories and workshops within the college campus In order to strengthen the learning of Materials, their properties, behavior and processing into workable forms (treatment, cutting, welding, sanding, finishing, etc.),

These workshops will provide traditional systems of construction as well as the latest machinery required for execution of a particular product of structure. With this in mind PVPCOA is developing following laboratories -

A. Construction Yard - For masonry, pottery related activities.

B. Carpentry Laboratory - For storage, processing, treatment of timber.

C. Surveying and Levelling Laboratory - For explring the tools required for carrying out site surveys related to land and its topography.

D. Climatology Laboratory - For learning the use of equipments required for measuring and analysis of various climate based phenomena

E. Model Making Workshop - Equipment require for model making by manual, semi-manual and digital processes including CNC and Laser cutting, 3D Printing, etc.

Workshops

We, at PVPCoA, firmly believe that the construction can be learnt only through “ Hands on “ working, as an accompaniment to theoretical lectures in the classroom. To understand the materials and construction processes students are regularly taken on site visits to ongoing construction sites accompanied by faculty members. Apart from this “ Hands on Workshops “ are regularly organised wherein experts from the field are invited to create structures and installations in the campus. Students from all years attend these workshops and thoroughly enjoy the entire process as they get to handle the materials and equipments also.

“ Meraki “ , Eye for Detailing (II yr) , High Rise structures (IV yr) , Work with Wood (III yr) , are few of such workshops, taken up annually, wherein the students work day and night (during the scheduled modules ) One can say that the entire campus is a construction lab.

Material Museum

PVPCOA considers this infrastructure to be the most crucial for the all-round learning of architecture and specifically the aspects of execution of the design done by the students. These laboratories will give the necessary tools for real, grass-root level learning by experience the design on 1 : 1 scale.

The PVPCOA Material Museum is a repository of all the material required for building construction, building services (plumbing, sanitary and electrical) and furniture design. With a view of allowing to see and feel the material by taking it in their own hands, so that they realize its texture, densities, behavior and other properties the laboratory has begun to be installed. This museum shall be located on the ground floor of the college building.

The Material Museum has been classified under four categories -

a. Product and System Display - This is a vendor-based display which is given to market vendors to install their proprietary systems. This will expose the students to various brands and market trends. Also having a visual vocabulary in front of their eye will help them relate the theory to the actual on-site practices. The various systems like Non-timber windows, partitions, plumbing and electrical systems shall be installed by the vendors with the aid of PVPCOA for the students benefit.

b. Material Sample Display - This is a faculty member driven display where in basic units of construction are displays through out the college at various alcoves and niches. This is so make the building units more accessible to the faculty members and students.

c. Material Brochure Library - There are numerous manufacturers, suppliers and brands for any construction and proprietary systems like plumbing, electrical, windows and door systems, paints, timber derivatives, etc. The Material Brochure library will code and catalogue various brochure and make them accessible to the students.
